Supporting the trade
According to a Statistics Canada survey, of the 10 jobs business owners found hardest to fill, the most serious gap was in trades — ranking ahead of engineers, teachers and nurses. Over the next couple of decades as the baby boomers retire we could see a shortage of up to 1 million skilled trade workers. We need to encourage growth in the trades. According to the TDSB, 1,700 students are now registered in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), which allows them to earn credits toward their high school diploma, while the hours they work on a job are applied to journeyperson certification in a skilled trade. Another 10,000 students are in co-op placements, the board reports.
Next Level Projects proudly sponsors one of our carpenters helpers as an apprentice. And we look forward to offering ourselves to local schools as a co-op placement.
